90 Years of Colas History
90 Years of Colas History

The history of the company dates back to the 1920’s, when bitumen emulsion was discovered and enabled to build bituminous roads without having to heat up the binding material. Société Routiére Colas was founded in France on 16 May 1929 following an agreement with Shell oil company. The name Colas derives from cold asphalt. After gradual growth, by the 1950’s, the company had covered 1/5 of the French asphalt production. A decade later Colas made its first appearance in the French stock exchange. The first overseas expansion was in Canada in 1962, and the company kept on expanding to Indonesia, Libya, Iraq, Columbia, Venezuela and the United States. In 1985, Colas joined the Bouygues group. A few years later the company started to expand to Eastern Europe, and Hungary became the first country with a Colas subsidiary in the region.

Innovation at Colas

The Campus for Science and Technology (“CST”) is a driving force in the exchange of expertise and know-how amongst research experts, academics, industrial sites and operational teams in charge of our jobsites.

Its laboratories are equipped with cutting-edge, high-tech equipment. The versatility of the men and women who work there is also an asset.

In cooperation with the French National Institute for Solar Energy, Colas came up with the world’s first photovoltaic (solar) road in 2015. WattWay is a thin photovoltaic panel, which is capable of generating clean, renewable energy once installed onto the road surface, while not restricting traffic on the road in any way.
Illuminated and remote controlled road marking
LED illuminated road marking technology, which, in addition to enhanced road safety functions, enables the sharing of road surfaces between different commuters.
Minimizing traffic disturbance of road work sites
Three community based mobile solution: Automatic detection of warning zones (Anais), urban construction traffic flow optimization (Qievo), single interface for users of shared parking places and multimodal commuters (Moov’Hub).

Warm Mix Asphalt

In October 2012, Colas became the first company in central Europe to build WMA trial sections using foamed bitumen. Via this method, we are capable of keeping mixing and installation temperatures down to 110-150 °C, which implies a 15-30 °C reduction in comparison with regular procedures, leading to lower energy consumption and significantly improved eco-friendliness. At the moment, six of our asphalt mixing plants are fitted with bitumen foaming equipment.

Whispering Asphalt

In addition to providing outstanding acoustic characteristics, this "whispering" wearing course is characterised by excellent skid resistance, while not requiring specific winter operation and maintenance.

SEVE Eco-comparateur Application

The SEVE Eco-comparateur application, which is in use at the Group, gives a reading of the carbon dioxide emissions associated with various road construction technologies. Through schematic diagrams, the energy consumption values of alternative pavement structures become comparable, thus allowing us to cut the amount of greenhouse gases released to the environment.

SEVE

Road Design Software

The method entails designing the thickness of pavement layers with consideration to strains deriving from the number of passing vehicles and climatic conditions, while relying on decades of practical experience. Roads designed with Alize software will not crumble before the end of their predicted life-span.

Plant-Mixed Recycled Asphalt

With 100% recycled asphalt and emulsion produced in a special mobile mixing plant, this cold asphalt mix provides cost-efficient application for reconstruction of minor roads.

Safety is the number 1 value at Colas. We created the notion of Safety Attitude that represents our commitment in safe and healthy working environment. Safety must guide our activities and way of thinking at all times.

Colas Út

Activities

Colas Út came to life through the fusion of such major construction firms as EGÚT Rt., DEBMUT Rt. and Hoffmann Rt. The legal predecessors had been working in the frontline of Hungarian road construction as members of the international Colas Group since 1996, and went on to merge in 2009 to form Colas Út. With its two – Eastern and Western Hungarian – regional directorates, eight asphalt mixing plants and one emulsion plant, the firm managed to cover the entire country. Several decades of experience in the trade, state-of-the-art equipment, a solid technical background and well-trained personnel ensure that first-rate quality is always delivered.

Colas Közlekedésépítő

Activities

One of the group’s newest members, Colas Közlekedésépítő, was established in late 2016. Through the years, they have completed over 200 kilometres of motorway sections, including such large-scale investments as the 30-kilometre-long stretch of the M6 motorway between Szekszárd and Véménd, where they managed to build three viaducts and 32 other structures, including the second longest in Hungary, the Szebény viaduct, over a span of two years. They were also tasked with constructing concrete pavements and structures in a length of 12 kilometres on the M31 and in a length of 20 kilometres on the M0 motorway ring around Budapest. In addition to two legs of the M3 between Nyíregyháza and Vásárosnamény, the M85 between Enese and Csorna, and the circular bridge on the Hódmezővásárhely bypass section of main road 47, they have proved their expertise in several bridge construction and renovation jobs.
